Pleistocene sites
The PEOPLE team survey the alluvial terraces of the Modder, Riet, Vet, Doring, and Sand in the western Free State, as well as the major pans and springs located within their catchments, in search of archaeological and palaeontological localities dated to the Middle and Late Pleistocene. Only a few sites of that kind were known before the start of the PEOPLE project, and almost all of them located in the Modder basin (Toffolo 2024). The map below illustrates all the known sites in the region, including the sites discovered by our team. The localities currently investigated by the PEOPLE team are shown in green.
